Fall 2020 Course Information

Fall 2020 course offerings were updated in the Testudo Schedule of Classes on July 15, 2020 to accommodate physical distancing guidelines due to the COVID pandemic.

Course Delivery Options

Class Attendance Expectations: Whether the class is face-to-face or online, if class meeting days/times are indicated on your student schedule, you are expected to regularly attend each of those classes on the days/times indicated.

COURSE DELIVERY TYPES
Fall 2020 courses are offered face-to-face, blended, or online.

Face-to-Face
  • The class meets in person, in a classroom, for all class meetings.
  • The course appears on student schedules with the following note: "This section is face-to-face"
Blended Learning
  • The class meets both face-to-face and online.
  • Students are expected to regularly attend class both face-to-face and online on the days/times indicated in the Schedule of Classes.
  • The course appears on student schedules with the following note: "This section is blended"
  • Most* blended courses meet face-to-face in a classroom on some days, and online on other days, as indicated on the Schedule of Classes.

    * In a small number of blended courses, the class will be divided into smaller groups that alternate between face-to-face and online participation, such that on any given day, one group participates face-to-face while the other group simultaneously participates online. In such cases, the instructor determines when each group will meet face-to-face versus online. These courses are indicated by the following note in the Schedule of Classes: "Alternating face-to-face/online class meeting. Please see instructor for details.".
  • The online portion of a blended course can be provided in one of three ways: synchronously, asynchronously, or a combination of both.
Online
  • The class meets online in one of three ways: synchronously, asynchronously, or a combination of both.
  • The course appears on student schedules with the following note: "This section is online"
  • If specific meeting days/times appear on the student schedule or the Schedule of Classes, the course is synchronous, and the student is expected to regularly attend that class (online) at those times.

SYNCHRONOUS VS. ASYNCHRONOUS INSTRUCTION
Online courses (and the online portion of blended courses) can be provided synchronously, asynchronously, or with a combination of both synchronous and asynchronous instruction.

  • Synchronous: Synchronous instruction is provided in real-time, where the class meets online at specified times. Students are expected to be in class, online, at the specified time(s).
  • Asynchronous: The instructor provides students with online content to review on their own time.
  • Combination: Some portions of the course are provided synchronously, and other portions are provided asynchronously. Specific meeting dates/times for the synchronous portion of the course are indicated both in the Schedule of Classes and on student schedules.

TAKING ALL COURSES ONLINE*

Students who would like to take all courses online may do so by searching the Schedule of Classes for available online courses and adjusting their schedules with those courses (please refer to the How to Search for Courses Based on Delivery Method section below for information on finding courses based on delivery method).

IMPORTANT NOTE: Certain populations of students should be aware that changing the delivery method of their courses may have critical implications (e.g., potential impact on immigration status). Please review Important Considerations When Changing Your Schedule for more information.

How to View Course Delivery Method in the Schedule of Classes

The delivery method for every course/section is displayed in the Schedule of Classes.

When viewing sections of a course, all delivery methods that are available for the course are displayed at the top of the listing. If no delivery methods are displayed at the top of the listing, then only face-to-face sections are available for that course.

FACE-TO-FACE (Schedule of Classes)
Face-to-face courses can be identified in the Schedule of Classes as follows:
  1. No Icon: The space beneath the course section will be blank
  2. Meeting Days/Times: Specific meeting days and times will be displayed
  3. Location: A specific, physical classroom will be indicated

BLENDED (Schedule of Classes)
Blended courses can be identified in the Schedule of Classes as follows:
  1. Icon: The blended icon will appear on the left, under the section number
  2. 2 Rows of Information: There will be at least 2 rows of meeting information for the course, one corresponding to the face-to-face portion of the course and one for the online portion of the course

Meeting information details for the two rows will display as follows:

  1. Location: One row will display a specific face-to-face classroom assignment (e.g., KEY 0120 and ASY 3207 in the examples below), and the other row will display "ONLINE" as the classroom assignment
  2. Meeting Days/Times: In addition to attending class face-to-face at the times indicated, if the "ONLINE" portion of the class indicates specific meeting days/times, then you must also attend class online at those times. If "Class time/details on ELMS" is listed for the "ONLINE" portion of the class, then this portion of the class is delivered asynchronously; in this case, no specific meeting times are required for this portion of the course.
  3. The following note will display for a small number of courses that are configured with an alternating meeting structure: "Alternating face-to-face/online class meeting. Please see instructor for details."

ONLINE (Schedule of Classes)

  2. Location: The location will indicate "ONLINE"
  3. Meeting Days/Times: If specific meeting days/times are listed for an online course, then you must attend class online at those times. If the meeting time is listed as "Class time/details on ELMS", then the class is delivered asynchronously; in this case, no specific meeting times are required for this course. Courses that offer a combination of synchronous and asynchronous instruction will have 2 rows of information: One row will indicate the specific synchronous meeting times, and another row will represent the asynchronous portion of the course; you are expected to attend online on the days/times indicated.
